Before shutting it down, the creators asked it to formulate the security protocols for Pilgrims. Robert learns from his boss that no one has successfully breached these protocols because they were designed by the unrestricted quantum mind, while the ROC intentionally constrained the abilities of later AI systems.
ROC compels Robert to join a team aimed at eliminating Jacq and an unknown clock-smith to prevent further evolution of the robots beyond human comprehension. When Robert protests against their plan to kidnap Jacq’s wife and young daughter, Vernon Conway, the leader, shoots him and leaves him for dead. Meanwhile, Jacq encounters the robot responsible for altering the others. The robot explains that he and the other robots intend to migrate to a radioactive zone inaccessible to humans. Initially doubtful, Jacq comes to accept that the robot has evolved naturally like humans have. Following several philosophical exchanges, Jacq offers them his battery, which they utilize to create a new design resembling a hybrid between a dog and an insect.
The robots help repair a vehicle for Jacq, allowing him to depart for the city. When Conway arrives at the robot outpost, he eliminates two of the four robots. Jacq discovers the injured Robert and heads back to the outpost as Conway injures Cleo and defeats the evolved robot. Jacq takes down all the ROC assassins except for Conway, although he sustains further injuries during the fight. As Conway gets ready to kill Jacq, the new robot intervenes and saves him by pushing Conway off a cliff. Jacq learns to trust the uninhibited robot again when he reunites with his family, and they leave for the coast together. Meanwhile, Cleo and the new robot journey deeper into the irradiated desert, a place where humans cannot follow. Upon reaching the coast, they witness the ocean and realize that the Earth is healing, bringing hope for humanity
