Fast forward to 1973, U.S. government agent Bill Randa recruits former British Special Air Service Captain James Conrad, an expert tracker, to lead an expedition to map Skull Island, a newly discovered location. They are accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel Preston Packard and his team. The group also includes anti-war photographer Mason Weaver, who suspects the expedition is a covert military operation and wants to reveal it.
