Blue Ruin: A mysterious outsider's peaceful life is turned upside down

Dwight (Macon Blair) is a homeless man with messy hair, living in his car and searching for food and money in trash bins. A policewoman wakes him to inform him that Wade Cleland, who killed his parents, is about to be released from prison. Dwight watches Wade's release and steals a gun, but damages it while trying to unlock it and discards it. He then gets a knife and confronts Wade in a club restroom, fatally stabbing him in the temple after a short fight.

In his escape, Dwight realizes he left his car keys near Wade's body. With blood on his hands from slashing a tire of the Cleland Gang’s limousine, he steals their car. He finds a teenage boy inside the limo, stops to let him out, and confesses to the murder. After cleaning up the blood and cutting his hair, Dwight resembles an average person instead of a beach vagrant. He visits his sister, Sam (Amy Hargreaves), for the first time in years and tells her about killing Wade. She is shocked but seems pleased.

When Dwight mentions she should have heard about the murder on the news, he realizes the story hasn't been reported, indicating the Cleland Gang may be after him for revenge. Consequently, Sam takes her daughters and leaves. While his sister is away, Dwight waits in her house for the Clelands to attack. Two intruders enter, one armed with a crossbow. Dwight manages to run over one of them, Teddy. Although he gets shot in the leg with an arrow by the second attacker, he drives them off.

He then puts Teddy's unconscious body in his car trunk. Dwight attempts to perform surgery on his leg but fails to remove the arrow and collapses in a hospital waiting room. After waking up with his injury treated, he leaves the hospital in a gown and finds his hidden car. He knocks on the trunk, and Teddy responds from inside. Ignoring Teddy, Dwight drives to meet his old friend Ben, convincing him to give him a rifle. Back at his car in a field, Dwight unlocks the trunk and confronts Teddy with the rifle, trying to secure a promise that the Clelands will leave his sister safe. During Dwight and Teddy's talk, it becomes clear that Wade didn't kill his parents; it was actually Wade's father, who has since died of cancer.

His motive stemmed from an affair between Dwight's father and Wade's mother. Dwight's mother was killed by accident. To prevent their father from dying in prison, Wade took the blame as he was dying from cancer. Dwight instructs Teddy to call his family to settle their conflict. Teddy jumps out of the trunk and wrestles Dwight's rifle away. As Teddy aims it at Dwight, Ben appears and shoots Teddy from a distance. Ben and Dwight return to Ben's house, where Dwight borrows a smaller gun and drives to the Clelands' home. He removes Ben's car battery to keep Ben out of further trouble. At the Clelands', Dwight collects all the guns and disposes of them in the water.

He urinates on Wade's father's grave, digs a grave for Teddy, and buries him. Finally, he leaves a message on the answering machine and hides, waiting for the Clelands to come back. The Cleland family, consisting of a man and two women, listens to Dwight's message. He requests they leave his sister alone since they are even in family deaths. When they refuse, Dwight appears and shoots the man. Unbeknownst to him, a teenage boy from the limousine is nearby and shoots Dwight in the stomach with a shotgun. Dwight knocks the shotgun away, believing he will die from the injury, and tells the boy to take his car in the woods. He reveals that he is the boy's half-brother due to their parents' affair. In anger, the older woman retrieves a hidden machine gun. Gunfire erupts as Dwight kills the two women. While lying on the floor, bleeding, he whispers, "the keys are in the car.
